Library brings culture of 8 foreign countries to DeKalb

DeKALB – Travel the world without leaving DeKalb from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday as we portray the customs of eight different countries throughout the DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St.

Guess the spice in Morocco, learn about Chinese calligraphy from an expert, make Scandinavian woven heart baskets and yarn dolls in Sweden. sample Chin Chin in Nigeria and more.

Other countries featured include Ghana, Indonesia, Chile, and Germany.

Each country will have crafts, activities, and food samples available while supplies last. Special performances will be scheduled throughout the evening. Programs and “passports” will be handed out at the welcome table. Visit each country, get your “passport” stamped, and enter for a chance to win a prize! Bring canned goods for additional raffle tickets.

This program is made possible by the Brian D. Slavenas Center for Cross-Cultural Understanding. After graduating from DeKalb High School in 1991, Brian served two years in the Army Airborne in Italy.

On Nov. 2, 2003, the Chinook 47 helicopter Brian was piloting was hit by a shoulder-fired missile while flying over Fallujah, Iraq. While both pilots and 14 others were killed, 20 of the 36 people on board survived thanks to Brian’s quick thinking and reaction.

The purpose of the center is to provide educational materials and programming with information and insight on world cultures to the public.

The library has partnered with Kishwaukee College, the First Lutheran Church, the NIU Center for Southeast Asian Studies, the NIU Latino Resource Center, and the NIU Center for Black Studies to bring this “8 Countries in 1 Day” program to the community. A special thank you to the DeKalb Confectionary for providing raffle prizes to the event!

This free event is open to all, no registration required! It will be hosted again in October featuring eight different countries.
