DeKalb police unveil free-to-use safe exchange zone

DeKALB – People hoping to finalize that Craig's List purchase or pick up an item bought on Facebook Marketplace, or even safely exchange custody of their child, can now do so thanks to a Safe Exchange Zone in the parking lot of the DeKalb Police Department.

DeKalb police announced the new zone on a Facebook post. It is located in the front parking lot of the police station, 700 W. Lincoln Highway.

According to the post, the Safe Exchange Zone is meant to provide a safe place to buy, sell, or trade items with others. The space is marked with signs, and will be monitored 24 hours a day.

DeKalb police hope the safe area will deter thefts, robberies, fraudulent transactions and domestic violence which can occur during child exchanges.

The zone is free for anyone to use and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
