I’m sometimes surprised to hear that many community members don’t know there are several excellent clinics at Northern Illinois University that are open to the community.

You needn’t be a student, faculty or staff member at NIU to receive care at three clinics operated by the NIU College of Health and Human Sciences: Couple and Family Therapy Clinic; Physical Therapy Clinic; and Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic.

It’s our goal to provide you with the highest, state-of-the art quality care. It’s also our mission to educate future caregivers. So, when you opt to see our clinicians, you also are helping a future audiologist, physical therapist, speech-language pathologist or therapist.

You’ll be treated by trained clinicians or students who are being supervised by faculty clinicians who are expert in their fields and who hold current state licensure.

Our services are offered on a sliding fee scale, and in some cases covered by insurance.

Here’s what we offer:

Couple and Family Therapy Clinic – We work with individuals, couples and families, offering a safe space to discuss conflicts or problems. We provide help with challenges such as stress from responsibilities and decisions; child and adolescent behavioral problems; coping with addiction; feelings of despair, loneliness, anxiety or fear and thoughts of suicide. Our clinic, located in Wirtz Hall on the NIU campus, is open Monday through Friday, with evening hours Monday through Thursday. Call 815-753-1684 or email to schedule an appointment.

Physical Therapy Clinic – We help treat a wide variety of acute and chronic musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. Some of the conditions we treat include: Ankle/foot injuries, arthritis, balance difficulties, back injuries and pain, bursitis, concussions, falls, headaches, knee injuries/pain, post-surgical rehabilitation, repetitive use injuries, tendinitis, vestibular dysfunction, and more. Our clinic at the NIU Family Health, Wellness and Literacy Center, 3100 Sycamore Road in DeKalb, is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 815-752-2675 or email to schedule an appointment.

Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic – We offer comprehensive evaluation and treatment for those with hearing concerns, tinnitus, dizziness/balance or concussion-related issues, as well as speech, language, cognitive communication and swallowing disorders. Our speech-language pathologists offer evaluation and treatment of speech, language and cognitive impairments, swallowing impairments, fluency disorders and stuttering, Autism Spectrum disorder, and more.

Our audiologists provide comprehensive hearing assessment for all ages – including newborn hearing screenings, hearing aid evaluation, select and dispensing, tinnitus evaluation and treatment, and more. This clinic also is at the NIU Family Health, Wellness and Literacy Center, and open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 815-753-1481 or email

Also, we offer a Hearing Aid Walk-in clinic, Mondays from 1 to 2 p.m., Wednesdays from 8 to 9 a.m., and Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m.
