DeKalb Area Retirement Center – Oak Crest recently celebrated National Volunteer Week with a special reception and presentation of the Volunteer Oak Leaf Award.

Pianist Barb Grulke provided beautiful music during the program while a variety of desserts were served.

Joan Launer, community events coordinator, welcomed everyone and introduced volunteers present that had received the Oak Leaf Award in preceding years. The award is given each year to volunteers who have donated many hours and for the impact of the service.

The 2019 Award was given to Barbara Samulowitz and David Samulowitz. Barbara a creative volunteer who is always willing to share her time and talent in doing things to enhance Oak Crest and to make some of those special days of the year more special for residents and staff. She has made and donated various items for the Art and Craft Fest which benefits the Good Samaritan Fund. Her hands are always busy doing something for Oak Crest residents and staff.

David Samulowitz is the volunteer that all residents and administrative staff count on Monday through Saturday. When the mail is delivered to Oak Crest he is there waiting to sort and put it in mail boxes. With 275 residents that is not an easy task. Holiday time is even more fun.

Each recipient was presented with an Oak Leaf Award Pin and flowers.

Musician and songwriter Ron Lofton entertained the group with songs that delighted the volunteers. Liz Meyer joined Ron in singing “God Bless Our Volunteers.”

Liz Hoppenworth, director of Resident Services expressed appreciation to the volunteers for all they do for Oak Crest residents and staff every day.

Oak Crest is located at 2944 Greenwood Acres Drive in DeKalb.

New volunteers are always welcome and needed. Anyone interested in volunteering, can call 815-756-8461 and ask to speak to Joan Launer. Applications are available at the Reception Desk.
