KC to offer information on short-term training programs

The Kishwaukee College Continuing Education department is holding information sessions about the fall short-term training programs.

Veterinary Assistant information sessions are June 24 and July 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. in room A1221 at the college. Dental Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, and Sterile Processing Technician information sessions are on July 31 and Aug. 21 from 6 to 7 p.m. in room A1221 at the college. Information sessions are free and open to the public.

Short-term training programs prepare people for a variety of entry-level positions in a wide range of career fields. They are also a great way to explore a career before committing to a degree program. Short-term training programs range from four to 20 weeks, including an externship. The programs prepare students to not only work in their field but also successfully pass their national certification exam. Completion of a short-term training program provides an entrance into a career path that begins with a skilled, entry-level position with the opportunity for further career advancement.

The short-term training program descriptions and schedules for fall 2019 are:

Dental Assistant: Sept. 3 – Dec. 10, Tuesday/Wednesday, 6 to 9 p.m.

Dental assistants provide preventative and corrective dental care under the direct supervision of a dentist or dental hygienist. The dental assistant is responsible for assisting with patient care as well as providing administrative support to the office.

Pharmacy Technician: Sept. 3 – Dec. 10, Tuesday/Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m.

Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists to dispense prescription medication. Depending on the position, the technician may also manage third-party billing, answer telephones, direct customers to items or to the pharmacist for medication consultation, receive written prescriptions, clean and sterilize dispensing bottles and instruments, answer questions regarding non-drug products, and collect payments.

Phlebotomy Technician: Sept. 3 – Dec. 11, Monday/Tuesday/Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to noon

Phlebotomy technicians obtain and prepare specimens for laboratory processing. Phlebotomists are traditionally associated with drawing and preparing blood in hospitals, clinics or physician’s offices. However, phlebotomists can be employed in a wide variety of fields that work with any bodily fluids that can be laboratory tested.

Sterile Processing Technician: Sept. 3 – Dec. 10, Tuesday/Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m.

Sterile processing technicians provide support to all patient care services in a health care facility. They are responsible for decontaminating, cleaning, processing, assembling, sterilizing, storing, and distributing the medical devices and supplies needed in patient care, especially during surgery.

Veterinary Assistant: July 30 – Dec. 19, Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday, 6 to 9:45 p.m.

Veterinary assistants are critical members of a veterinary staff who are trained to assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with medical procedures on sick and injured animals. Veterinary assistants are also trained in examination, customer relations, and veterinary hospital office procedures.
